Take “Emily in Paris” to Your Own Closet

The premiere of “Emily in Paris” caused a frenzy of controversy. On the top of that list lies Emily’s bold style choices. Emily, played by Lily Collins, continuously surprises viewers with her dramatic outfit changes, flashy pieces and the ability to tread all over Paris in a pair of 6-inch heels. Who knew a fictional character could become a fashion icon so quickly and have every binger of “Emily in Paris” asking, “Where do I find that skirt and how do I make it mine?”

Patricia Field, the genius behind the fearless fashion in “Sex and the City,” paired up once again with Darren Star as costume design consultant for “Emily in Paris.” Field seemed to create Emily’s looks with Carrie Bradshaw in mind, as many of Emily’s outfits pair similar high-end designer brands with fast fashion pieces.

Emily breaks fashion rules by mixing prints, colorful patterns and adding countless accessories that all somehow work together. Though wearing her eccentric outfits may require bravery, finding pieces from Emily’s closet to create similar looks isn’t too difficult. Find a colored beret and, voilà, you’re halfway there.

Season 1 Episode 1

Emily’s first day in the Paris office may have been a little rocky, but her outfit portrayed confidence with a dash of “I’m an over-enthusiastic tourist.” Although I’m not sure when the perfect time to wear an Eiffel Tower blouse is, her snakeskin skirt is a fall fashion staple.

Season 1 Episode 2

Going out for a shopping day in town? It might not be exactly like Emily’s trip to a Parisian market, but pairing a white crop top with straight-leg jeans will create a similar look. This top is sweet and dainty with its thin straps and it may give you the same confidence Emily had to break up with her lazy long-distance boyfriend.

Season 1 Episode 3

Two-piece sets are a trend that keeps growing. Emily adds a french twist to her gingham jacket and shorts with her bright red beret. It can’t get more French than that, non?

Emily’s exact jacket can be found here and her shorts here, or you can shop this cheaper look-alike from Zara (jacket & shorts) and the red Beret from Nordstrom.

Season 1 Episode 4

Even one of Emily’s more casual outfits doesn’t waver from making a statement. This look is simple to recreate with black leggings, sneakers, and a DIY tie-dye sweatshirt (I know you made one during quarantine). To finish off the outfit, add a bright-colored coat in the winter. Adding colorful accessories is an easy way to test out bold fashion trends.

Season 1 Episode 8

Emily’s color-blocked sweater in this episode sent winter dreams flying. Her matching beanie and hoops take this comfortable travel outfit up a level. It may be oversized and casual on the top, but don’t worry, Emily is still wearing heels.

Season 1 Episode 10

The final episode features a la vie en rose look. This matching set with a pink houndstooth pattern depicts Emily’s style to a tee (and is my personal favorite outfit of the season). Emily transitions this set to a night look by adding a jacket and wrapping a belt around her waist. To finish the look she adds white booties, heeled of course, and a pink cap.

Although not always practical, Emily’s outfits are consistently eye-catching. You don’t have to be in Paris to recreate these looks. By following a few of her style patterns and mixing colors, prints and textures, Emily’s style can be made with items in your closet. Here’s to hoping for a season two that will bring more fashion inspiration and less impractical shoes.
