How to get involved with comp-sci outside of the major

Computer Science at UT Austin is an incredibly intensive program, but there is much to be gained from having skills in the field. As a freshman computer science major, I know firsthand the rigors of the major and the benefits of getting involved in the computer science community. There are so many opportunities to get involved with computer science outside of the major, with several organizations, clubs, and available classes.

Girls Who Code College Loops is one of the best ways to get basic computer science knowledge for free! This organization gears towards helping women interested in computer science learn new concepts alongside other like-minded individuals. However, membership is open to everyone interested in learning about computer science.

I love that the CS community works hard to ensure each student finds their sense of belonging in the program. With organizations like Women in Computer Science, the Hispanic Association of Computer Scientists, and the Associations of Black Computer Scientists, there are many opportunities for students to find support and connection in the community.

The Computational Science and Engineering Certificate at UT Austin is another great opportunity to learn Computer Science at UT Austin. I’ve heard great things about the certificate, as it requires significantly fewer hours but still provides sufficient knowledge in the field. This is perfect for students looking to get more of an education in computer science without actually declaring it as a major.

Any degree of knowledge in Computer Science is valuable, even if your future career isn’t a software engineer at Facebook. Besides, as a Computer Science major, I can promise you that the content is fascinating and the professors are exceptional. The UTCS community is super supportive, and any involvement with it will be rewarding. I encourage you to check out these wonderful opportunities and start getting connected!
