Perhaps you’re mourning the loss of Fun Fun Fun Festival, or maybe you simply can’t afford tickets. No matter the reason, ORANGE is here to suggest three alternatives to this weekend’s Sound on Sound Fest.
Story by Katarina Brown
Texas Book Festival
If you’re truly craving that festival atmosphere, look no further than the Texas Book Festival. With over 200 authors coming into the city to talk on panels, sign books, and get boozy during the infamous night Lit Crawl, Texas Book Festival is one alternative to Sound on Sound. The festival is entirely free and offers something for everyone. Nick Offerman, from television show “Parks and Recreation,” and Lois Lowry, popularly known for writing “Number the Stars,” are some of the big names in attendance, but the author lineup is full of smaller gems and ways to fill a weekend.
Emerge: ATX’s Annual Graffiti Art Show
Just as offbeat and hip as Sound on Sound, but at a fraction of the price, Austin’s graffiti art show brings artists and DJs together for a creative evening. You’ll be able to dance beside graffiti masterworks while sipping on a nice G&T inside a 1920s-style bar. How could crawling out of a tent to party even compare?
Jazz at St. James’
Lastly, if you are craving a true music festival, purchase $25 tickets for Jazz at St. James’. A partnership between the University of Texas Division of Diversity and Community Engagement and the Austin Jazz Society, Jazz at St. James’ has been going on for 22 years and has built an amazing community. Austin vocalist Carmen Bradford is headlining, so if you love powerful vocals and smooth listening, be sure to make this part of your weekend plan.
