“I am not born for one corner; the whole world is my native land.” -Seneca
The term “wanderlust,” according to the Oxford English Dictionary, is a word borrowed from the German language that conveys “a strong desire for or impulse to wander, travel, and explore the world.” Our generation has discovered the thrill of the unknown and a desire to expand our horizons, geographically and academically. This blog will give UT students some insight into the global opportunities our college has to offer.
The Oxford Summer Program, facilitated by the University of Texas English department, has taken students overseas to Oxford, England since 1984. The program houses students in Oxford University dorm rooms, and UT English professors teach lessons of Shakespeare, Jane Austen, and the medieval times from inside the walls of the oldest English-speaking university in the world.
The program prides itself on its healthy balance of academics and fun, as a major part of the trip involves weekly visits to other areas of England for anything from field trips to Bath, to London museum tours, to performances in Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.
Aside from the enriching educational benefits you will receive through your experience in Oxford, the program directors also put tremendous value in your own individual adventures and exploration of the country—and others nearby. Students will enjoy three-day weekends every week that, with the exception of one overnight program field trip, are open for travel plans with your fellow students.
The study abroad experience is endlessly rewarding, and this is just one of hundreds of opportunities open to students at the University of Texas. For more information, visit the website for the Oxford Summer Program, or the University of Texas Study Abroad Office.
