As Season 21 of ABC’s “The Bachelor” winds to a close, fans can finally say good riddance to Nick Viall when he hands out his final rose this upcoming Monday. Follow along with the attached drinking game to liven up the next two hours now that Corinne is gone. At least there’s comfort knowing she’s reunited with her real soulmate, Nanny Raquel. Pour yourself a glass and settle in for the 2-hour finale as Nick tries to find his future wife. Fourth time’s the charm, right?
Chardonnay + Popcorn
The buttery flavors of popcorn bring out the buttery notes of chardonnay without overpowering the wine’s delicate flavor. Chardonnay can also withstand sweeter vanilla and caramel flavors, so try caramel corn if classic movie theater popcorn just won’t cut it.
Affordable Option: Pacific Grove California Chardonnay, $5.99, Trader Joe’s
Drink When: The remaining contestants are sitting around the hotel discussing their relationships with the same man.
Syrah + Pepperoni Pizza
A red wine with a robust, full-bodied flavor pairs well with cured meats and hard cheeses like those you might find on a pepperoni pizza from Austin’s Pizza. Syrah (also known as Shiraz) can handle strong spices and flavors too, so reheating leftover Chinese or Indian takeout is another good option.
Affordable Option: Yellow Tail Shiraz, $4.97
Drink When: You’re reminded that all of the women are too good for Nick anyway and need something that packs a little more punch.
Moscato + Spiced Nuts
The sweetness of moscato is complemented nicely by nuts, like almonds and pecans, and spices, like chipotle and ginger. Spiced nuts are also relatively simple to make, but if you don’t feel like making them you can buy them at a gourmet grocery store like Trader Joe’s. The sweet and spicy combo should counterbalance the dull predictability of the show well.
Affordable Option: Barefoot Moscato, $8.99
Drink When: You start to worry about Chris Harrison a little too much. What does he do outside of Bachelor Nation? Will he ever age? Chris, blink once if you’re okay.
Rosé + Frozen Strawberry Fruit Bar
Two light, refreshing flavors meet to make the perfect combo that feels appropriate for the rose theme of the show. Rosé often features fruity or floral notes, which makes this pair work. For a more savory pairing, try a simple cheese and crackers snack. Soft, mild cheese like brie work well. To upgrade, top brie with peaches and a honey drizzle and serve with crostini.
Affordable Option: Franzia Sunset Blush, $15 (for 5 liters)
Drink When: The show inevitably features tropical scenery and you’re longing for summer.
Champagne + French Fries
Salty foods pair nicely with dry champagnes. Look for a bottle labeled “brut” or “brut nature”, which have less sugar than a dry or demi-sec. The bubbles offer a refreshing palate cleanse after a rich snack, like fries or potato chips.
Affordable Option: André Brut, $3.99
Drink When: Nick pops the question with Neil Lane in tow.
Next season, we can look forward to Rachel Lindsay, a Dallas lawyer and University of Texas at Austin alumna, starring as the first African-American Bachelorette on the show. Season 22 will premiere later this spring. Cheers to our fellow Longhorn for making strides to increase diversity in media.
Note: Prices will vary depending on the retailer.
