A day of exclusive music and long lines full of eager fans. No, this is not SXSW again, it’s Record Store Day.
Story by Jennifer Hernandez
Record Store Day is an annual holiday among avid music listeners. Every year, fans go to their local record stores to find exclusive vinyls put out by well-known artists. Some of these records are re-releases of classics and others are rarities with only a few copies sold in the world. This year, Record Store Day falls on Saturday. Whether you’re a veteran or going in head-first, check out some of the records people will be trying to add to their collection this time around.
Animal Collective—“Meeting of The Waters”
With the recent release of their latest EP, Animal Collective will be releasing another project. “Meeting of The Waters” is a live music EP set in the Brazilian rainforest. It’s not an Animal Collective album without a daring element.
Best Coast—“Late 20s/Bigger Man”
Only 3000 people in the world will be able to get their hands on this record which contains B-Sides from the duo’s 2015 album, “California Nights”. For any fans longing to hear something new, this will help fill the void.
David Bowie—“Cracked Actor live in Los Angeles”
Many magnificent records by David Bowie can be found at your local record store but this one is a must-have for any collector. This never-before released recording of the legendary performer’s concert features live classics such as “Space Oddity” and “Changes.” According to Record store Day, this record is a limited worldwide release.
Gerard Way—“Into The Cave We Wander”
Get ready to feel emo again because two new Gerard Way songs are coming. In addition to the record, the vinyl will include a comic book, “Cave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye,” which is also created by Way.
Grouplove—“Little Mess” EP
The indie pop band’s newest EP will contain 5-tracks including four new songs and a live version of “Enlighten Me” from the band’s most recent album. To get a sneak peak of the songs, head to their YouTube page which has a trailer for the new record.
The Notorious B.I.G.—“Born Again”
It has been 20 years since one of the most bombastic lyricists of the 90s left this earth. To commemorate the anniversary of Biggie’s death, “Born Again” will be released on vinyl as an exclusive release. Did we also mention the record will be on double gold vinyl?
Sia—Spotify Sessions
A voice as compelling as Sia’s is meant to be heard live and now her live vocals can be heard on vinyl. The Spotify Sessions release will have six of Sia’s most recent hits including “Elastic Heart” and “Chandelier.”
Spoon—“Hot Thoughts” Record Store Day
Hometown band Spoon will release a special Record Store Day vinyl of their newest single, “Hot Thoughts.” Along with the new track, a remix of Hot Thoughts will also be heard on the record alongside a cover of the Elvis Presley song “Love Letters.”
The Wombats—“The Wombats Proudly Presents…This Modern Glitch”
The album was a huge success in the U.S. alternative charts and now the indie pop collective from the U.K. will have their 2011 album re-released on transparent blue vinyl. Consider yourself lucky if you grab one of these this weekend because there are only 500 copies being sold.
