Biscuits and Groovy was founded six years ago by Jon Lach to satisfy the needs of Austin’s vegan and vegetarian eaters. Its original location opened in Hyde Park at 51st and Duval, says four-year employee Ellen Spradling. Since then, the menu has expanded beyond vegan and vegetarian options and the business has grown to a second location on Barton Springs Road.
The humble food truck serves fluffy biscuits with a variety of toppings. Spradling attributes the success of Biscuits and Groovy to “a consistency in [the] dishes and the way [they] take care of the customer.” Although some dishes now contain meat, eggs or cheese, all can be prepared vegan or vegetarian. “We feed the individual,” Spradling says.
The Hyde Park location stays faithful to the latter part of its name: Groovy. The silver tin truck is decorated simply with the restaurant’s vintage-looking logo, and each customer’s order number is printed on a rainbow disco ball. With menu items named after famous disco artists, such as The Donna Summer, The Aretha Franklin and The Bee-Gee, this food truck does not stray from its theme.
Guests have the option to take their orders to-go or dine at one of the five wooden picnic tables outside. The tables are covered with a tin roof so customers can enjoy the decadent biscuits in rain or shine.
Architectural Engineering junior Qui Ton likes Biscuits and Groovy because of the convenient location and the wide array of menu options. Though he likes the restaurant’s diversity, Ton says he gets the same thing every time: the biscuits and gravy.
Loyal customers appreciate the dependability of the restaurant’s classic flavors just as much as they appreciate the unique approach it takes on Austin’s breakfast options. Customers Michael Night and Rikki Green say they enjoy that the place offers more than just breakfast tacos.
Biscuits and Groovy is a refreshing morning alternative in a city riddled with taco establishments. If you are looking for something original, Biscuits and Groovy has a wide range of options that can satisfy your cravings.
