Remember the the raunchy reality dating shows your parents never knew you were watching? These cringe-worthy shows are full of strippers, bad clothes and the worst scripted lines of all time. Contestants and scorned lovers lashed out as their hearts were broken on television for millions to see. We’ve cringed as we compiled all of our favorite early 2000s dating shows.
Story by Sabrina Martinez
Parental Control
This show was addicting to watch. If a contestant’s parents didn’t like their child’s current partner, the child would be sent on three different dates with other people. The catch? The significant others would watch the dates with the parents! At the end, the “child” would have to choose to pursue their current relationship or switch to pursuing a different lover. The rejected lover would always leave the show swearing that they never loved the other and that they could find someone better.
Room Raiders
This show was great to watch if you are someone who enjoys being nosy. On this show, contestants would show up to a potential lover’s house and snoop through their room, while the room’s owner was hidden away in a creepy white van. The contestant would then choose someone to date based solely on their rooms without pictures, descriptions, or even meeting the person inhabiting the room. It was wild to see what objects, artifacts and dirty laundry were hidden away in the drawers and closets of people looking for love. Let’s not forget that our beloved Zac Efron made his debut on this show!
Next
This show was probably the funniest of them all since it was solely based on looks. The contestant would stand outside of a bus full of suitors, as they would come out one by one. If the contestant didn’t like the suitor they’d simply say, “Next,” and the next suitor would appear, ready to mingle with the contestant. The best shows were the ones where the suitor would get rejected within seconds of stepping off the bus and then proceeded to yell and swear at the contestant.
Rock of Love, Flavor of Love, Shot at Love, etc.
Bret Michaels, Flavor Flav and Tila Tequila made the best bachelors and bachelorette. What made these shows such a hit? The strippers, breast implants, stilettos, fights and all the alcohol! These insane shows had contestants stay in one house and compete in trials and games to win the hearts of these celebrities. At the end of each week the celebrity would look over each contestant, give them a token to stay in the competition and pop the question we all wanted to hear. Like Bret Michaels used to say, “Would you like to stay in this house and continue to rock my world?”
