Between living out of their rehearsal space in Brooklyn, releasing their debut album “This Album Doesn’t Exist” and creating an animated video series to accompany their project, DREAMERS have managed to break into Billboard’s Hot Rock Songs chart, peaking at position 33. Not to mention, the group has made an extensive festival run this year, including appearances at Seattle’s Bumbershoot Festival and Meadows Festival in New York, amongst others.
ORANGE Magazine got in touch with Nelson of DREAMERS to discuss the time fans stood outside of their show guarding the venue from looters and other topics of interest.
What album can you not stop listening to right now?
Nelson: “Antisocialites” by Alvvays.
What was your favorite song in middle school?
Nelson: “Dumb” by Nirvana.
What color is your music?
Nelson: Pink, because just like our album it does not exist.
What food best describes your band?
Nelson: Peanut Butter. It’s delicious, nutritious, ubiquitous and most importantly, it’s kind to animals.
What’s your weirdest tour experience?
Nelson: We’re saving the really juicy stuff for our tell-all “These Indiscretions Do Not Exist.” Every day is surreal. One time all the power was out in Detroit and people were guarding the venue with baseball bats and weapons due to looting. Very Mad Max. We had a great show.
What is your collective spirit animal?
Nelson: We have individual spirit animals, but collectively it’d be the Wolf. We often have the audience howl to our song “Wolves” and we’re a tight pack.
Who is your celebrity crush?
Nelson: Elon Musk.
What songs make you think of your hometown?
Nelson: Nick is from Seattle so everything 90s grunge takes him back to growing up there. As a band, we started in NYC. The Strokes and The Velvet Underground really remind us of everything we love about that city.
What’s the best compliment you’ve ever received as a band?
Nelson: Anytime someone tells us our music has gotten them through a hard time, it confirms to us that we’re doing exactly what we should be.
What’s your biggest goal right now?
Nelson: To play the first sold-out show on the moon. And to get out of rehearsal in time for this fabulous little taco truck.
What are you excited about right now?
Nelson: We’ve been writing a lot of new material in LA this summer we just can’t wait to share. We’ll be actually recording our next record soon. And of course, our upcoming tour with The Maine and Night Riots. They put on amazing shows so this next run is going to be epic. All the dreamers out there, we invite you to come share the dream with us.
