What is the story of CAAMP from the beginning?
Taylor: We met when we were young. We are from the same hometown in Ohio. And you know, we were in a bad high school band. Broke up when everyone went to school and we just kept in touch. I was writing songs and playing open mics down in Athens by myself and convinced Ev to move down with me.
How would you describe CAAMP’s sound to someone who has never listened to you guys before?
Taylor: Folk rock I’d say. Or just Indie. I don’t like “rock” as a descriptive. Indie—yeah, just different.
Who have been some major influences as CAAMP has progressed as a band?
Taylor: I’m a big Justin Vernon Fan, Tallest Man on Earth, Ray LaMontagne.
Evan: I grew up listening to rock and roll on my parents’ records—Elvis Costello, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, The Clash—you know, Rock and Roll.
So you have a new album coming out sometime in the Spring, is there anything you can say about it that isn’t completely hush-hush?
Taylor: Yeah, I mean we are definitely progressing.
How is it different than your first album?
Evan: Instrumentation wise it’s a little different.
Taylor: We plugged in some instruments… some drums, a little electric guitar, some bass. The songs are definitely still CAAMP songs but some of them are just a little super charged.
Do you have a favorite one off the new album?
Taylor: Strawberries—it’s closest to my heart.
Evan: I don’t have a favorite. I don’t know, I like them all.
