As fans escaped the cold and filed into Stubb’s, Private Island took the stage on Nov. 7.

The sextet native to Southern California is comprised of Christian Lum, Tommy Nickerson, Camera Anderson, Michelle Guerrero, Tim Barbour and Roger Mawer. Known for their pop-rock sound, the group has spent the past couple years dominating the Southern California music scene. Their 2014 EP “A Good Look” includes major hits like “Dissolve” and “Bear Hands,” blending wavy sounds perfect for that summer drive to the beach.
The band’s latest studio project, “Night Drive,” attempts to create a sultry R&B sound, compared to their previous, more lighthearted work. During their second tour, Private Island made their Texas debut. With a unique guitar, heavy bass and sultry vocals, the sextet has quickly made a name for themselves nationwide.
As fans made their way down the stairs into the hazy basement of Stubb’s BBQ, the opening band, Hush was already generating good vibes. Given an easygoing mood and the intimate setting of the back bar at Stubbs, the crowd could not have been more prepared for Private Island to take the stage.
Lead singer, Christian Lum, began the show with their hit song “Drugs,” a chart-topper from their 2016 EP “Sunbreak.” As the night continued, Lum and keyboardist Michelle Guerrero dueled each other in a stellar tradeoff as lead vocalists. By the end of the night, the crowd had completely dissolved itself into the music. Needless to say, their new album will present some sounds to be heard.
