Dreams were shattered earlier this month when an automobile collided with the storefront of the newest poke establishment, Poke Bowl. While waiting for the restaurant to be rehabilitated, try your hand at a DIY poke bowl.

Poke bowls are traditional Hawaiian dishes of raw fish and other vegetables. Note that buying raw fish can be an intimidating experience. Be sure to ask the employee behind the fish counter if the fish is safe to consume raw or look for the sushi-grade label on fish. The poke bowl could be compared to a deconstructed sushi roll for reference.
What You’ll Need
- 1 lbs. choice of protein (tuna, salmon, crab)
- 2 tbsp. soy sauce
- 1 tsp. rice wine vinegar
- 1 tsp. sesame oil
- 2-3 scallions
- ½ tsp. red pepper flakes (optional)
- Cooked rice (white or brown)
Additional Toppings
- Sliced cucumber
- Seaweed salad (optional)
- Pickled ginger (optional)
- Sesame seeds
- Avocado
- Wasabi
Directions
- Begin by making the sauce. The sauce, consisting of soy sauce, rice wine vinegar and sesame oil, can be substituted for a teriyaki glaze if necessary. The red pepper flakes and sesame seeds can be added to the mixture.
- Once you have your fish, cut into bite sized pieces. Combine with the sauce. It is not necessary to leave the protein to marinate in the sauce, but this adds a stronger flavor.
- Fill bowl with rice, add fish and garnish with any additional toppings. Best eaten with chopsticks. Serve and enjoy!
