Brown University alumna, Emma Watson, is not only an award-winning actress, but also a champion for human rights and sustainability efforts. As if her performances aren’t inspiring enough, she has spent her young adult life expanding beyond the screen into the realms of academia and activism.

While promoting her movie “Beauty and the Beast,” Watson started an Instagram account specifically to highlight her environmentally-conscious looks along the press tour. Watson’s style has become a vehicle for her activism recently, but she has always been considered fashionable. The development of her personal style, from the Harry Potter days to present, mirrors her growth as an actress, student and global citizen. See some of her most iconic looks below.

2001-2003

A fresh-faced Watson attends the premiere of the first Harry Potter film in a simple shirt, her Hermione-esque bangs pinned back, but still intact.  Her signature, natural blushed makeup look has withstood the test of time.

Maybe this outfit was foreshadowing Watson’s coming interest in environmentally friendly, or green fashion? Either way, this monotone red-carpet look was lots of fun for her.

Another daring ensemble featuring a trend that has made a reappearance recently: embroidered appliques. Young Watson’s gold accents and camo base made for a fun, youthful look.

Natural looking curls and a cute, bright lip perfectly accent Watson’s 90’s-era tank top and chunky necklace pairing.

2004-2006

Watson pairs a bold, military-style jacket with low-rise jeans and classically minimal makeup. Fun earrings and a deep side part add even more fun.

Watson became the youngest teen to appear on the cover of Teen Vogue in 2005, a nice start to what would become a significant modeling career.

Loose curls and no-makeup makeup accent Watson’s eccentric purple top, further accessorized with a beaded necklace. While the overall look is still youthful, Watson’s hair and makeup looks are becoming more mature.

2008-2011

Almost as if she grew up overnight, Watson graces the pages of Flare Magazine with a very grown-up and boho look. A flowing, embroidered top pairs perfectly with brown tones and soft curls.

Watson showcases another grown-up look consisting of leather-like, knotted material. The color blocking and halter style were on-trend, but edgy enough to signal Watson’s transition from preteen to young adult.

A pixie cut and little black dress make a sleek statement. An ornate gold bracelet brings out the subtle gold eyeshadow, drawing attention to Watson’s more dramatic makeup look.

A sassy pose, sky-high heels and a classy statement dress combine to create the perfect  awards show look for Watson. Her classy pixie cut adds the perfect amount of drama to her outfits.

2012-2015

Watson expertly incorporates mixed patterns and colors into her outfit. Her mid-length hair has grown out from the pixie cut we all know and love, but is by no means less glamorous.

A bold red lip and middle part accentuate Watson’s feminine features and her dresses’ elegant neckline. Watson had assumed the role of U.N. Women Goodwill Ambassador at this time in her life and certainly looked the part.

Watson continues the bold-lipped, middle-parted look, this time pairing a more casual flannel with a wide belt and black pants.

2016-Present

Watson looks perfectly polished with her hair pinned back and shoulders bared. Smoky eyes and delicate stud earrings are balanced by a nude lip.

A far cry from her all-green look in the early 2000s, Watson’s monotone white outfit paired with bangs and a top knot is all kinds of classy.
