Fans of all ages rushed inside the Moody Theater to grab their spot for an evening with G-Eazy. “Ladies and gentlemen, the Beautiful and Damned,” the familiar seductive prerecorded voice of Halsey spoke over a dark room, as the stage illuminated the words “Act I: The Beautiful.”
Cool and dressed in all black with perfectly-greased hair, G-Eazy entered the stage while the venue stood proudly, screaming and cheering for what was to come. He kicked off the evening with the album title track “The Beautiful and Damned.”
People were dancing and making out. Even a few security guards were spotted mouthing the lyrics and sneaking in a few dance moves here and there. This was not just a concert, it was a party. “Are you ready to have the best night of your life? ‘Cause you’re in for a show tonight,” said G-Eazy.
As the night progressed and he performed more songs, G-Eazy introduced “Fly Away” as one of his favorites and most meaningful songs and the band began to play. The venue lit up with fans’ flashlights swaying back and forth. When the song came to a close, he walked off stage to prepare for the second part of the show.
The stage illuminated the words, “Act II: Damned” as the musician reappeared in all white, wearing a leather jacket that read “damned” on the back. To the right of the stage sat a small red cooler, some red solo cups, a flask and hair-comb, providing a 2017 Clyde, just missing his Bonnie. He paid a few visits to this designated party setup to fix his hair and get a few swigs from his dark flask.
G-Eazy performed songs off his older album “When It’s Dark Out,” such as “Random” and “You Got Me.” After a few throwback songs, he told the audience a story of young Gerald performing at South by Southwest, he estimated about 8 or 9 years ago. Austin was the first city he played outside of New Orleans. “This shit is especially crazy to me because I’ve been coming to Austin the longest,” said G-Eazy as the crowd cheered in pride of their city.
G-Eazy concluded his speech by thanking the audience for loving live music, as he started singing the last song of Act II, “Eazy.” The song is written to his younger self, mentioning the struggle it took for him to succeed. He worked long and hard for his career and it shows.
The room got dark once more as G-Eazy left the stage. The cries for an encore grew louder second by second. The background read one last phrase, “Act III: Epilogue.”
G-Eazy sang “Him & I” and “Me, Myself & I,” bringing the crowd to a crazed state, singing along to each and every word. He concluded the third and final act with “No Limits.” Hoping to be the loudest city of the tour, the audience sang at the top of their lungs per G-Eazy’s request.
As quickly and exciting as the concert began, it ended. G-Eazy ever so cooley exited the stage and fans stuffled out. Their night drew to a close, but fans will be talking about the “The Beautiful and Damned” tour for many years to come. If you were not at the Moody Theater on Sunday night, you missed something special.
