Not fitting a certain body type should not keep you from fantastic fashion finds.
Story by Manuel Valdez
The fashion industry has yet to embrace anyone beyond a size 14, and even when it does, that embrace is usually hesitant. A lot of the clothes that are marketed as plus-size are either made for people in their 80s or have a minimum cost of $100. To put it plainly, it should be easier for folks to find clothes that fit them and make them feel confident. Hopefully, this list of plus-size shops will make shopping more accessible.
Local Thrift Stores
The most important places you should check out are your local thrift stores. Thrift stores have a wide selection of vintage and current looks that won’t break your budget and typically range from 1X to 4X. Your best bets are Goodwills because of their large inventory and popularity. You’ll want to stay away from Goodwill Boutiques and higher-end shops since they set higher prices and are often a bit more exclusionary with what they accept and put out on the sales floor. There are also online thrift stores such as divaexpressvintage.com and thredUP.com that cater to fuller figures.

Forever 21
Forever 21’s plus-size section offers a variety in almost all of their brick and mortar stores with sizes available from 1X to 4X. The clothing is affordable, available online, up-to-date on trends and consistent with sizing that is true to fit. Some physical locations don’t have a plus-size section and a select number of items may be on the pricier side, but the online store is always your best bet. Additionally, Forever 21’s limited Forever 21 Red stores carry plus-size clothing at a guaranteed lower price. Going with this store is usually your safest option and you’ll be hard-pressed to walk away without a signature yellow bag in tow.

Torrid is an exclusively plus-size brand with clothing available in sizes 10-30. The brand is focused on inclusivity and making customers feel comfortable in their clothes. With a larger online presence than physical, Torrid is most known for its extensive and quality denim collection, featuring on-trend looks and even clothing inspired by pop culture. Its clothes are pricier but it is a choice place when buying jeans.

Ashley Stewart
Ashley Stewart is another exclusively plus-size brand that carries sizes 12-36 and is available in-stores and online. This brand is also more trend-leaning with a range of prices, from affordable to pricier items. They recently released their Curvy Girl line that emphasizes luxe looks with a larger price tag. Ashley Stewart’s selection is varied. As it comes fresh off of a rebrand, the brand is perfect for the fashionistx seeking something new.

Simply Be
Simply Be is a primarily online store that features sizes 8-28. Their focus is on finding the perfect fit and following trends. Simply Be has affordable clothing options but leans more towards higher priced pieces. While the price would typically make this store an instant no-go, their frequent deals and well-stocked sale section make it a site that is worth a visit when you’re looking for a bargain.
