“Austin, you are worthy,” McLaughlin declared the words she wished were told to her.
The singer continued her touching speech, clarifying who she seeks to validate with her art. “I do value your opinions unless you’re homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist. If you’re any of those things, I think we’d all prefer you to be more quiet.”
The audience cheered in agreement with the London native. She buried deeper into her 52 minute set with hits like “River,” and “Never Tear Us Apart.” Her voice transcended listeners to a state of bliss. The crowd swayed like sunflowers facing the sun.
Briggs dressed in an all-black ensemble, paired with white running shoes. The outfit seemed fitting as she dance around with purpose and occasionally ran laps around the stage. Her energy was infectious. Her smile reached to both sides of the massive screens surrounding her.
Minutes before the set wrapped up, the 26-year-old closed her eyes, absorbing her final moments of ACL. When her eyes met the crowd again, they appeared watery and sweet.
“I’m Bishop Briggs and I can’t believe I’m here.”
