It has been six long years without any new Jonas Brothers material. Many fans interpreted this as the end of an iconic era, but the Jonas Brothers have finally resurged with a new single and a forthcoming tour.
Story by Miles Eackles
Many 20-somethings remember the Jonas Brothers as the omnipresent force during their formative years. From hits like “Burnin Up” and “Lovebug” to their transition to television in Camp Rock and their Disney Channel show “Jonas,” these siblings permeated American youth culture. Then, they disappeared. For six years, there were no Jonas Brothers as a collective. There was Nick Jonas, Joe Jonas and Kevin Jonas.
During these dispiriting six years, the brothers went on to pursue different ventures and build lives outside of the Jonas Brothers. Nick pursued solo music and went on to marry Indian actress Priyanka Chopra, Joe released new music with his band DNCE and married “Game of Thrones” star Sophie Turner and Kevin settled into suburbia with his television personality wife, Danielle Deleasa and their two kids. It seemed as though the skinny-jeaned trio was something of the past..
The Jonas Brothers not only changed lives for their listeners but they were also a vehicle for other artists, like Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez, to grow in popularity. “We were in love with Demi because of Camp Rock,” says sophomore Naomi Arce. It can’t be argued that the Jonas Brothers were a huge reason why people tuned into Camp Rock. Because of this, the discovery of Lovato through the Jonas Brothers implicates the influence they had over our life.
The genesis of the Jonas Brothers took place in 2005 when they recorded their first song entitled “Please Be Mine.” Steven Greenberg, president of Columbia Records at the time, heard the song and decided to sign them as a band. Provisional band names such as “Sons of Jonas” were considered until the band decided on the Jonas Brothers. The band toured with acts like The Veronicas and Kelly Clarkson while working on their debut album.
Arguably, the song that put the band on the map was their cover of the British punk band Busted’s song “Year 3000.” Featuring the prepubescent voices of Nick and Joe, the song definitely appealed to a pre-teen audience. “The Jonas Brothers have a spirit of of nostalgia of when we were all children and life was really simple,” Arce says. “Year 3000 takes me back to that time.”
The music videos that complemented their biggest songs didn’t just serve as a visual aid, but as a signifier of the time in which it was released. Evident in their “Burnin’ Up” music video is them dressed in the latest styles performing at a pool party. It can’t be denied that their audience either wanted they what had or fantasized a relationship with one of them. “The music video for ‘Burnin’ Up’ gave me more serotonin than anything,” freshman Chase Seabourn says. “I specifically remember watching the music video and feeling pure joy.”
How unforseen it was for all of us when they released their new single “Sucker,” a tongue-in-cheek anthem about the affection they feel towards their partners. With driving guitars and charming lyrics, the song represents a new era of the Jonas Brothers; revealing where they are currently in their lives. The adolescent themes of their older material are nowhere to be found. Instead, they are replaced by topics relevant to the audience that grew up loving them.
The single art for “Sucker” reveals a surprising creative choice as well. Nick, instead of Joe, is placed in the middle of the trio. This decision could be due to the popularity Nick obtained due in part to his lavish wedding ceremony with Chopra. It might also because Nick is the de facto fan favorite of the group.
With this new era looking as promising as it is, a revitalization of the fervor that was so present during the ‘00s seems to be approaching. The Jonas Brothers, while not for everyone, is what many young adults grew up with. During this stressful time of exams and midterms, fans can find solace in their enduring love of the band that characterized their childhood.
