If you’re looking for a renewal of faith in the masterful art of cinema, look no further than these three upcoming releases.
Story by Manuel Valdez
Our love for movies was sparked by the lack of adult supervision as children. By the time we were 10 years old we were experts in everything that Lifetime, Turner Classic Movies, BET and many more channels had to offer. We have seen the triumphant highs and the devastating lows of cinema, but nothing could have prepared me for these upcoming movies.
“The Dirt” directed by Jeff Tremaine
“The Dirt” is a Netflix original Mötley Crüe biopic based on their original autobiography. It is also one of the best things that we have seen in 2019. First of all, Machine Gun Kelly plays Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee, meaning that Machine Gun Kelly has a very prominent acting role and nothing has shaken us to our core quite like that fact. Second of all, Pete Davidson plays an important enough role in this movie that his inclusion in the trailer is vital to the story comprehension that Pete stays in the trailer.” We didn’t know anything about this band before we saw this trailer, and now we are experts on all of their Wikipedia pages. We have also watched this trailer almost every day since it came out; it holds a form of power over us that we can’t quite express. If you love bad wigs, horrible men and that one episode of “Catfish” that stars Machine Gun Kelly, then this is the perfect movie for you. “The Dirt” is now available for streaming on Netflix.
“Ma” directed by Tate Taylor
“Ma” is a thriller/psychological horror film starring one of the greatest actresses of our time, Octavia Spencer. Yes, you did read that correctly, this horror movie stars Octavia Spencer. Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, let’s discuss the rest of the trailer. Essentially, some teens are up to no good and Octavia Spencer steps in as the cool chaperone. Things start getting creepy when Spencer gets a little too invested in the lives of these teens. We knew we were in for a whirlwind at the exact moment in the trailer that she sings, “Don’t make me drink alone! Don’t make me drink alone!” This film promises murder, revenge, foolish teens and Academy Award-winner Octavia Spencer. It’s one of those trailers that shows the entire plot of the movie, but that is not going to stop us from watching it five times at the movies. “Ma” comes to theaters on May 31.
“Yesterday” directed by Danny Boyle
We love that meme referencing how The Beatles are inferior to contemporary artists such as Carly Rae Jepsen, Mitski, Lizzo, etc. It’s hilarious to undermine the extensive contributions that The Beatles made to the music industry because it is kind of true — like, yes…, we’ve all listened to “Melodrama.” So, when we saw the trailer for “Yesterday,” we understandably lost our minds. “Yesterday” stars Himesh Patel as a struggling musician who gets into a biking accident and awakens to find that he is the only person in the world who knows who The Beatles are. He uses his knowledge to release their greatest hits as a solo artist to achieve fame, get Kate McKinnon as his agent and jam with Ed Sheeran.
Honestly it took us three full back-to-back viewings of this trailer to fully comprehend that this was an actual movie that was going to be released in theaters. Now this must be the absolute height of cinema. The idea is so unique and it’s really refreshing to have a man of color as the lead character in a Beatles biopic-adjacent film. It is also a hilarious concept for a film. It hasn’t been released yet but we’ve already placed it in the list of top ten “Movies That Bring Us Immense Joy but That We And Everyone We Know and Love, Hates.” “Yesterday” comes to theaters on June 28.
We love movies, whether they are absolute trash or true works of art. We’re not yet sure where these movies will land on the spectrum, but we do know that we will force everyone we know to watch them and you should too.
