The country will be in lockdown for the rest of April due to Covid-19, luckily there are some new movies being released on demand to keep us company.
Lockdowns across the country have forced many businesses to halt their productions, and this includes movie theaters. Forcing studios to move their tentpole films like “No Time to Die” and “Black Widow” from spring to fall 2020. As for films that were released before lockdowns began, studios have decided to put them online earlier than scheduled. Unfortunate for movie theaters, but quite fortunate for the public who’s stuck indoors and running out of options on what to watch.
Here’s a list of recent films that are now available for rent, purchase, or streaming online.
Onward
This latest Pixar film stars Tom Holland and Chris Pratt as two elf brothers living in a modern magical world. Together the brothers embark on a journey to find a gem that will bring their father back to life for one day. The film is cute, fun and has a great message about the bond between siblings. “Onward” was released in theaters on March 6th, and was released on Disney+ on April 3rd. It is also available through Youtube, Amazon Prime and Google Play.
The Invisible Man
Starring Elizabeth Moss, “The Invisible Man” is a suspense thriller telling the story of a woman whose ex boyfriend fakes his death, and uses his power of invisibility to stalk and terrorize her. It was released in theaters on February 24th, and received a 91% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. It is now available for purchase on Amazon Prime, Youtube and Google Play.
Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey
A spin-off to “Suicide Squad”, with Margot Robbie reprising her role as Harley Quinn, “Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey” follows the titular character as she fights to gain her indepndence. It’s an energetic, heartfelt and vulgar film, quite like Harley Quinn herself. The film plays to the character’s strengths, and even has a little Deadpool flare in there. It was released on February 7th, and is now available on Youtube and Vudu.
Lovebirds
Netflix’s newest romcom was originally set to release in theaters on April 3rd, but lockdowns forced the studios to place it on the streaming giant instead. The film stars Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani as a struggling couple who gets involved in a murder case, and spends the night trying to prove their innoncence and possibly save their relationship. “Lovebirds” will be available for streaming on Netflix on April 23rd.
SXSW films
SXSW was cancelled this year due to COVID-19, leaving many filmmakers without a platform to premiere their films. Earlier this month, Amazon came to the rescue and announced they would be premiering SXSW on their streaming service, Prime Video. The films will be available to stream for 10 days. A launch date hasn’t been set but according to SXSW, Amazon is looking to release the films late April.
Staying inside all day is quite the challenge, but luckily some good films are on the way to help ease the stress.
