The 2024 award show season provided an abundance of iconic pop culture moments: Ryan Gosling giving a camp rendition of “I’m Just Ken” at the Oscars, Taylor Swift announcing her 11th studio album, “The Tortured Poets Department” at the Grammys and Selena Gomez gossiping with her friends at the Golden Globes. On top of all the awards and performances, these events presented viewers with memorable outfits to admire or critique. While many looks were elegant and eye-catching, only a few made it on the best-dressed list below. Since BurntXOrange couldn’t make it to these red carpets, we’ve linked videos of the looks mentioned throughout the story.
Suki Waterhouse in Valentino
Suki Waterhouse arrived at the 75th Emmy Awards in a vibrant Valentino look. The Emmys saw a variety of red outfits walk the red carpet, but this bright dress put a spin on a classic red dress look. Side cut-outs met a drop-waist ballgown skirt with deep pockets. A simple bow on the waistline separated the top and skirt, leaving her baby bump on display. In an interview with E! News on the red carpet, Waterhouse explained the struggles in making this dress, with Valentino redesigning the outfit to accommodate her pregnancy.
Anya Taylor-Joy in Dior
Anya Taylor-Joy brought an elegant silver look to the 2024 Oscars. Designed by Maria Grazia Chiuri, Dior’s creative director since 2016, the gown took inspiration from Christian Dior’s “Junon” dress made for his Fall/Winter 1949-1950 collection. The French fashion designer used the Italian painter Sandro Botticelli’s work “Birth of Venus” as inspiration for his creation, and Chiuri created her version of the look for the Oscars, according to Taylor-Joy in a red-carpet interview. The strapless gown features a structured, bejeweled bodice with a skirt covered in ombré layers resembling flower petals. Taylor-Joy, a house ambassador of Tiffany & Co., completed the look with jewelry from Blue Book 2023: Out of the Blue, the brand’s aquatic-themed collection.
Rosamund Pike in Dior
Rosamund Pike honored her movie “Saltburn,” an eat-the-rich comedy thriller, by wearing a dark, mourning dress to the 2024 Golden Globes. The Dior gown is made up of a fitted, strapless bodice and a ballerina-length skirt decorated with black lace. The bodice features a floral, long-sleeve fishnet design that matches the statement headpiece Pike wore to cover her face. On the Golden Globes red carpet, Pike revealed she injured herself in a skiing accident in December and wanted to conceal any visible injuries as much as possible.
Miley Cyrus in Maison Margiela
Miley Cyrus arrived on the Grammys red carpet wearing a custom gown that took over 675 hours to make, according to Maison Margiela’s Instagram post. The bold dress, designed by the brand’s creative director John Galliano, was made of 14,000 gold safety pins to resemble looks from his previous Fall 1997 ready-to-wear collection. The safety pins were placed to imitate netting and undergarments. This golden outfit made Cyrus glow and put her radiant, yet daring personality on display. After this red carpet look, Cyrus would go on to have four more outfits lined up for the night.
Ariana Greenblatt in Vera Wang
Ariana Greenblatt walked the gray carpet this February at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in a Vera Wang ball gown. This dramatic haute couture gown was custom-made for Greenblatt, with the velvet fabric imported from Italy to make the dress perfect, according to Grenblatt’s interview with E! News. While simple, the burgundy gown photographed beautifully on the carpet and made Greenblatt shine for her SAG Awards debut.
Lily Gladstone in Gucci
After the success of “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Lily Gladstone made her Oscars red carpet debut in a custom-made Gucci gown that paid homage to Gladstone’s Indigenous heritage. Gucci’s creative director Sabato De Sarno and Indigenous porcupine quillwork artist, Joe Big Mountain, collaborated to create the midnight blue gown with a flowing cape. Indigenous artists on the Oneida reservation in Wisconsin worked to hand-quill the petals for the cape, according to Vogue. The dress highlights the talent and craftsmanship of Native Americans, and honors Gladstone as she became the first Native American woman nominated for best actress at the Oscars.
