If you lack experience, makeup trends can prove quite frustrating. TikTok, however, contains countless beauty hacks that might save you a couple of minutes getting ready in the morning. Influencers who have gone viral for these trends have posted videos testing out these hacks. I’ll give you a rundown of five popular ones so we can see if they will make or break your makeup routine.
- Using purple, blue and orange concealer.
Makeup is an art, and with art comes color balancing. On the color wheel, blue and orange are directly opposite each other, meaning they cross each other out. Blue concealer can cancel out orange skin tones found in under-eye bags of lighter-toned skin. With darker-toned skin, red or orange concealer cancels out the blue hues. TikTok creator Sarah Wolak (@sarah_wolak) who has olive-toned skin, put this trick to the test. Wolak dabbed the blue concealer under her eye, following up with the skin-toned concealer on top.
“This turned into my perfect concealer shade,” she said.
It’s safe to say this hack is not a myth!
- Bronzer before foundation? Hold on…
This trend seems to be illegal in the beauty world. Putting on bronzer before foundation is almost unheard of, but it just might be the trick to getting that natural glow. Before trying this hack, make sure your bronzer is cream-based; mixing powder under cream products can create clumps. This trick works for any skin tone; just use the products you already have!
New York City makeup artist, Kasey Spickard, told Makeup.com, “We’ve seen the trend for years with the likes of Scott Barnes (professional makeup artist) pioneering this idea of bronzing, contouring, blushing and highlighting underneath your foundation.”
- Lip stains, but don’t worry, it’s not permanent.
Many beauty experts strive for the perfect lips, whether that’s through injections, painful (but effective) lip-plumping glosses, or lip stains. The product applies just like lipstick, and is usually a darker shade. You let it dry for a couple of minutes, peel it off, and voilà, perfectly tinted lips.
Makeup artist Manuel Espinoza told Cosmopolitan, “Think of lip stains as the sister to lipsticks.”
Lip stains can be a great alternative to other options because of their longevity. MAC Cosmetics’ product, Versicolour Varnish Cream Lip Stain, says it lasts up to 12 hours. This is perfect for applying before work, an event or any long social activity.
- Aquaphor for everything.
Okay, maybe you aren’t trying to achieve that full glam look, but you want just a little something. That’s where Aquaphor comes in. The healing ointment can be used as chapstick, brow gel, clear mascara, and more. As the “clean girl” trend continues to reign supreme on TikTok, more and more are taking part in this trend.
According to an IPSY article, “The markers [for the clean girl aesthetic] are glowy, dewy skin, slicked-back hair, defined lashes, and fluffy brows.”
The look essentially proves the concept that you don’t need a ton of makeup to achieve a beautiful look.
Creator @lydiabirdd claims Aquaphor to be her “holy grail” in one of her videos, as she shows herself applying Aquaphor to her brows, eyelashes and lips. Skincare prep is a major asset to this trend, making Aquaphor a helpful friend.
- It’s blush and lipstick, all in one.
This one might be a little old school, but it gets the job done. If you’re struggling to find that perfect blush shade, take a shopping trip in your lipstick drawer and see what you can find. I can’t count how many times I’ve used my red lipstick as a blush. It blends easier than you would think.
“I’ll often use lipstick as (blush) on shoots, or even on myself – just blending it in with my fingers,” Topshop beauty consultant Hannah Murray told British Vogue Magazine. “It looks fresh, it shouldn’t be something you have to labor over.”
Whether these hacks actually work for you or not, they’re worth looking into. Sometimes, makeup doesn’t have to be as traditional as it’s made out to be but can instead be a fun space of exploration to see what works for you and what doesn’t.
