Coconut Cult probiotic yogurt has taken the world by storm, especially in local Austin grocery stores. The brand, founded in 2016, created “super-live” probiotic coconut yogurt that helps your body stay “super regular,” according to their website.
The tangy flavor and mousse-like texture comes along with their fermented probiotics in the yogurt. The current flavors on their website are original, chocolate mousse, harvest strawberry and two limited edition ones: wild passionfruit and raspberry blondie bar. Coconut Cult went viral on TikTok for its health benefits and unique flavor. Many UT students have even given it a try even though it has been hard for Longhorns to get their hands on it.
Kynnadea Sloan, a neuroscience major at UT, has been a fan of Coconut Cult for about six months now and her favorite flavor is the chocolate mousse. Unfortunately, Sloan, like many other UT students, struggled to find the yogurt in Austin for the past three months due to high demand. She said when she wants to restock her supply, she has to travel to a grocery store in her hometown of Fort Worth.
“I go to Fort Worth pretty often, so I just go home and buy three or four of them to take back to Austin because they last in the fridge for a pretty long time,” Sloan said.
Part of the reason that this yogurt is so hard to find is because of its self-proclaimed “health benefits.” The Coconut Cult website claims that consuming probiotics can result in several benefits, such as, “less bloating, more regularity, lower inflammation and maintaining a healthy weight.”
With 16 species of probiotics in it, a 8-ounce jar of Coconut Cult yogurt is priced at $10.
Sloan said she believes this price is in fact worth it for her as the yogurt helps her sensitive stomach.
“I feel like using a probiotic every single day that I actually enjoy has made a big difference,” Sloan said. “I just feel better when I eat it versus when I don’t.”
Ashley Medina, an employee at the Whole Foods on North Lamar Boulevard, said they have a lot of issues keeping Coconut Cult in stock.
“It either sells out too fast or we have to order it every day,” Medina said. “It’s up to the distributor if they have it in stock there to send it to us. Sometimes we order five cases and they only send us two.”
Medina said that Coconut Cult has been a customer favorite for the past two years and they get frequent questions about its availability.
“People will call us on the phone asking if it’s in stock to check with us before they drive all the way over here,” Medina said.
Medina said her Whole Foods location receives several phone calls a day about the yogurt and even has a meme in the back office about it.
“It’s a woman grabbing her hair and looks like she’s yelling something. We put a quote on top of it that says, ‘Do y’all have Coconut Cult?’” Medina said.
There are no signs of the Coconut Cult hype slowing. Some students have started using Coconut Cult’s website feature of searching stock at nearby stores. Students can also buy from the official website, but with the minimum purchase of two jars and shipping costs, it’s not an accessible option for everyone.
For now, UT students have to keep searching in hopes that their local Whole Foods or Sprouts will restock this coveted probiotic yogurt. Until then, those lucky enough to find it will have to savor every last spoonful.
