Everyone knows that October is basically just a way to celebrate Halloween for an entire month. Some people binge on candy, some carve pumpkins and some watch all the Halloween-themed movies they can get their hands on. If you find yourself in that last category, there is only one person you need to turn to in order to fulfill your desire for spooky, scary and zany thrills: Tim Burton. Below are five Tim Burton movies that are guaranteed to get you in the fall spirit.
Story by Mary Dolan
1. Sleepy Hollow
Sleepy Hollow has everything you associate with Tim Burton. Johnny Depp! Spooky trees! Christopher Walken! (Okay, maybe not that one.) However, it seems overlooked in comparison to other Burton/Depp collaborations. It’s a shame, because Sleepy Hollow has a great cast, perfect sets and a fun twist on a well-known story. It’s sure to make you check over your shoulder for the Headless Horseman when you’re walking alone at night.
2. Corpse Bride
Corpse Bride tells the story of Victor (Johnny Depp), a man who accidentally marries a corpse bride (Helena Bonham Carter) after putting a wedding ring on her finger. Together, the two must find a way to reunite Victor with his real bride before she marries another man. Corpse Bride is spooky, but it’s also very clever. It’s perfect for viewing with friends or family.
3. Beetlejuice
Let’s face it: you’ve probably tried to say “Beetlejuice” three times, but chickened out after the second word. It’s cool, we’ve all been there. For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about, Beetlejuice centers on Adam and Barbara, a recently deceased couple who hire crazy ghost, Beetlejuice, to scare an obnoxious family living in their house. Play some Harry Belafonte, gather your courage, and give Beetlejuice a viewing or two (or three.)
4. Edward Scissorhands
While Edward Scissorhands may seem creepy, it is at its core a surprisingly touching love story between Frankenstein-esque creation, Edward, and his human love interest, Kim. Things are complicated by Kim’s terrible boyfriend and the suburban families that are distrustful of Edward. Most people know the famous scene in which Edward creates an ice sculpture and “snow” for Kim, but it’s definitely worth a complete watch if you need a break from jump scares.
5. The Nightmare Before Christmas
“The Nightmare Before Christmas” skillfully combines the two awesome holidays into a horror movie/family comedy/romance that also has some truly epic music. The Nightmare Before Christmas tells the story of Jack Skellington, a skeleton and Halloweentown resident who accidentally comes across the cheery atmosphere of Christmastown. Grab some candy and sing along through his adventures: “This is Halloween, Halloween, Halloween!”
