The television host, known for his satirical critique of news, reporters and current events, will retire by the end of this year, when his contract expires. Comedy Central released a statement from President Michele Ganeless to confirm his departure after 16 years.

Stewart informed the studio audience that he would be leaving during Tuesday night’s taping of the show. He left the world speechless, but not Tweetless. “Daily Show” fans ran to Twitter to express their feelings, making Jon Stewart and “The Daily Show” rise in the ranks of trending topics.
