Art on 5th, Austin’s largest contemporary gallery (the only commercial gallery ever voted “Best in Austin” by the Austin Chronicle), opened in 1998 by owner Joe Sigel after realizing the need for a contemporary gallery in the city. Starting out with a collection of works by Picasso and Andy Warhol, the gallery now holds artwork (oil, mixed media, serigraph, etc.) from a range of artists, including Paul Stankiewicz and Kat McCool.
The gallery has a room dedicated to one of the largest collections of the Secret Art of Dr. Seuss containing framed serigraphs and unorthodox and bronze sculptures all done by Theodor Seuss Geisel himself.
Art on 5th is located on 1501 W. 5th St., and good news — admission is free, so go treat your eyes in your free time.
Film on 5th, Austin’s first and only vintage movie poster gallery, was recently opened after a donor added hundreds of original posters to the overall collection. It is located right across the hall from the art gallery.
