ABOUT US
ORANGE Magazine is a student-run lifestyle and culture magazine at the University of Texas at Austin. Our staff consists of writers, editors, designers, photographers and creatives who come together to produce forward-thinking, risk-taking, community-centered stories that spark conversation. In addition to our weekly digital content, we produce a 100-page print issue at the end of every semester.
WHO CAN APPLY
All majors are welcome to apply to any position. Weekly time commitment calculations include a 1.5 hour all-staff meeting and 1 hour editors meeting, if applicable.
TIME COMMITMENT
Please note that during our peak print issue production season (late Feb. – mid-April), all weekly time commitment estimates may be doubled to accommodate the deadline-heavy work we pour into our print issue.

ORANGE Magazine is restructuring and condensing. In the past, we have asked writers and editors to apply to a specific section (ATX, Music, Style, etc.). This time, please apply as a general staff writer or editor.

NOW TO THE APPLICATION!
Program Director/ Admin. Director (5-7 hours weekly)
The Program Director acts as a helping hand to the editors-in-chief in regard to administrative tasks and event planning. They will get an inside look into the full process of managing a magazine and cultivating staff culture. We’re looking for someone who is extremely organized and ready to support and creative smoother internal processes for the magazine.
Potential tasks may include planning and executing ORANGE events, managing finances, creating a newsletter and presenting staff with weekly analytics.
Social Media Co-Manager (3 hours weekly)
The social media editor will help manage and curate all social media posts and platforms. We are looking for someone who is knowledgeable about building an audience, has a unique voice and is engaging. A working knowledge of social media analytics is a bonus! The social media co-editor will work with the Creative Director and EICs to build social strategy, campaigns and promotions.
Potential tasks may include creating a social media calendar, creating innovative ways to post content from our website and managing social media campaigns.
Managing Editor (5 hours weekly)
Managing Editors are the most senior level editors who edit and publish stories to our website. Managing Editors will have a hands-on role in helping edit, manage and produce the print issue.
We’re looking for talented editors who are extremely well-versed in AP Style, story structure and journalistic principles.
Potential tasks may include managing the publishing schedule, collaborating with other editors, leading workshops and assisting the overall editorial process.
Staff Editor (4-5 hours weekly)
Staff editors are the first point of contact for staff writers. Staff Editors are to support writers in the pitch process and first-round edits on stories, along with fostering staff culture. Knowledge of AP style, grammar and journalistic story structure is strongly recommended.
Potential tasks may include managing internal editing processes, connecting staff writers to staff designers and photographers and editing digital and print stories.
Staff Writers (2-4 hours weekly)
Staff writers are responsible for pitching both digital and print stories for ORANGE. We are interested in writers who are curious, investigative and creative. Writers should be familiar with journalistic principles and practices and be willing to learn. Staff writers will receive direct feedback from staff editors, managing editors and the EICs, so they should be open to receiving constructive criticism. Writers must pitch at least 3 stories biweekly.
Writers have the opportunity to create long-form stories, feature stories, narrative stories, Q&As, think pieces and short-form articles.
Design Editor (5 hours weekly)
Design editors are the first point of contact for design staff. Design Editors are to manage and support the design staff in pitching and picking up art requests for web and print issue stories. They work closely with the Creative Director to maintain ORANGE’s brand identity and pitch exciting new ideas for a more forward-thinking design strategy.
We are looking for extremely organized and deadline-driven designers with an eye for ORANGE’s brand identity and who are great at managing and collaborating with other creatives.
Experience in print layouts, typography, graphic design is highly recommended.
Design Staff (3-5 hours weekly)
The design staff is central to ORANGE’s visual presentation. Design staffers will collaborate with staff writers on art for both digital and print stories. They work closely with the design editors on maintaining ORANGE’s brand identity. Designers should be able to work well under deadlines and be able to collaborate.
We are looking for designers with experience in illustration, typography and layouts.
Photo Editor (5 hours weekly)
Photo editors are the first point of contact for photo staff. Photo Editors are to support photographers in pitching and picking up photo assignments for the website and print issue. They work closely with the Creative Director to maintain ORANGE’s brand identity and pitch exciting new ideas to incorporate photography into the magazine.
We are looking for talented editors who are able to manage creatives and streamline the photo request process, as well as support photographers in growing their skill set.
Photographers must have their own camera(s) and have access to editing software.
Photo Staff (3-5 hours weekly)
The photo staff is central to ORANGE’s visual presentation. Photo staffers will collaborate with staff writers on art for both digital and print stories. They work closely with the photo editors on maintaining ORANGE’s brand identity. Photographers should be able to work well under deadlines and be able to collaborate. We are looking for photographers who have unique ideas and perspectives. ORANGE has an editorial photo style, so knowledge of background, lighting and styling is a plus.
Photographers must have their own camera(s) and have access to editing software.
Videographer (3-5 hours weekly)
The video staff plays a huge role in ORANGE’s visual presentation. Videographers will collaborate with the video editor to produce beautiful, insightful, creative videos to compliment our web content. They will also assist staff writers with art for both digital and print stories. Videographers work closely with the video editor on maintaining ORANGE’s brand identity. All staff should be able to work well under deadlines and be able to collaborate. We are looking for videographers who have unique ideas and perspectives. ORANGE has an editorial photo and video style, so knowledge of background, lighting and styling is a plus.
Videographers applying for a position on staff must have their own camera(s) and have access to editing software.
