Dominican Joe Coffee Shop Benefits Education Abroad

October 5, 2014

Sharla Megilligan looks like any other coffee shop goer, nestled in her wooden chair, working on her computer after a caffeine fix at Dominican Joe Coffee Shop. Other coffee-drinkers fill the cozy interior, which features pictures of people of the Dominican Republic, those whom the coffee shop aims to help. But Megilligan is not just the average customer—she is the co-owner of Dominican Joe Coffee Shop and founder of the non-profit Makarios International, which aims to help the impoverished people in the Dominican Republic through education and Christian outreach programs.

Everything is Smaller in Texas? Tiny homes Fight Against Chronic Homelessness

October 5, 2014

The 27 acres of land just east of U.S. Route 183 look just like any other patch of open land in Texas. The grass is a faded green and overgrown with shrubbery, patches of moss cling to the trees, and only birds and insects call this place home. The thousands of drivers who pass by it everyday easily overlook it. But, when Nate Schleueter and the rest of the Mobile Loaves & Fishes team look into this field, they see a vision, one that will revolutionize how communities deal with chronic homelessness.

Here There Be Monsters and Here There Be Fans

October 5, 2014

Growing up reading comic books or deliberating whether alpha-male James T. Kirk or Earl Grey fanatic Jean Luc Picard was a better Starfleet Captain was not “popular” at the start of the new millennium. Nerdom in the past was really an esoteric avocation, and now geek life is becoming trendy in Austin and across the country.

Hooked on Hookah

October 5, 2014

Although an age-old tradition overseas, hookah has become a hot trend among young adults in the U.S. The University of Texas at Austin is no exception, but hookah’s popularity may be growing for all of the wrong reasons.

Pedaling with a Purpose

October 5, 2014

As the sun began to set, and the sweat continued to drip down her forehead, she told herself it was only a few more miles until she could rest. Rest is exactly what Madeleine Enos needed after biking nearly one hundred miles in one day, but the black tar and white dashes seemed endless. Still she pedaled on with passion knowing that tomorrow she would wake up and trade in her wheels for a hammer.

ATX Rookie Guide to the State Fair

October 5, 2014

Some girls remember their first kiss, but I remember the first time I went to the Texas State Fair. As a Dallas native, I’ve clutched my grandpa’s hand at Fair Park for 15 years now. Every year, the State Fair is filled with ear-to-ear grins, fresh corn dogs and of course a loud “Howdy” from our friend, Big Tex, a 55-foot statue on the Fair Park grounds.

ATX Rookie Guide to Austin City Limits Music Festival

September 28, 2014

I was a senior in high school the first time I attended ACL. My wristband was a birthday gift from a boyfriend at the time, and together we strategically planned which artists to go see, what vendors to visit, transportation to and from Round Rock, and how we were going to get out of a mandatory marching band event that Friday night. We ended up using the excuse that we were going out of town to a wedding (which wasn’t technically false — my eyeballs joined Coldplay in holy matrimony that Friday night), but the point is that while hours of planning were invested in this process, my first ACL experience was riddled with mistakes that could have been avoided. Three years later, I’m attending my fourth ACL with an inch or two of wisdom. I present the “ATX Rookie Guide” to ACL.

Local Zoo Recovers from Burglary

September 28, 2014

Arriving early to prepare for the weekend’s big debut, Patti Clark walked in to her office at the Austin Zoo and Animal Sanctuary one morning, only to find a roll of black bags and a smashed cash register on the ground. Looking over the offices and the ATM, she saw that they, too, were in disarray. The zoo had been ransacked.

For Artist George Herms, All You Need is LOVE

September 28, 2014

Junk. At least, that’s what we call it. George Herms, however, marvels at trash heaps and paper scraps, blank canvases awaiting his transformative touch. For nearly 60 years, the Beat-generation artist has drawn from a hodgepodge of discarded, seemingly mundane objects to craft a myriad of collages and sculptures.
