Years of Sexism at the Oscars: Women aren’t getting recognition for work in the film industry

February 22, 2015

Considering the Academy who picks Oscar nominees and winners is mostly composed of old, white men, it’s no wonder gender inequality is rampant at the Academy Awards  and in the film industry in general.

It Really is On Us

January 23, 2015

Ray Rice. Kendall Sanders. Montrel Meander. Each man was a former high-profile football player. Each man committed an act of assault or abuse against a woman. Rice is currently out of a job after being released from his longtime team, the Baltimore Ravens. Sanders and Meander have been suspended from the University of Texas football team and are awaiting trial as well as a judicial review, which could result in their expulsion.

Why You Should Try Going Somewhere Alone

December 1, 2014

After stumbling upon an art pop-up playing FKA Twigs’ videos in New York city this past August, I quickly declared my passionate love for the British talent. I don’t really know how to accurately underscore FKA Twigs’ value. She’s smart, her voice is the human version of church chimes, and she dances like a water bender. Also, her hair is like something you would see out of a Star Wars movie — in a good way.

Texas Volleyball Maintains Dominance

November 10, 2014

Throughout this fall, there have been grumblings around campus about the state of Texas fall sports programs. Many students have voiced their disappointment that the University of Texas at Austin doesn’t appear to have a dominant sport on campus this season. But the fact is that UT does, and students need to open their eyes and recognize that. Yes, this is a rebuilding year for our football team, but the Texas volleyball team is ranked fifth in the country and has only lost one game. It’s time the UT community and the city of Austin acknowledge the consistent excellence of the volleyball program and show the team more support.

African Student Union’s Fest Africa Will Combine Traditional Culture and Modern Style

November 3, 2014

For African students at the University of Texas at Austin, the phrase “when in Rome, do as the Romans do” is easier said than done. There will always be some level of cultural disconnect as they tip-toe across the fine line of being “too African,” or “not American enough.” It’s the epic struggle of wanting to fit in, while trying not to lose the one thing that makes you different. For so long, it seemed that African students were faced with only two options: forsake their African culture and assimilate into American culture or be labeled an outcast for choosing to be African. But by creating the Fest Africa program, the African StudentsAssociation at UT attempts to show that it doesn’t always have to be one or the other.

GMOs: What Are We Saying “No” To?

September 29, 2014

Austin’s food scene is kind of magical. We have an abundance of tacos and junk food (hello, Gourdough’s) but we also have the sort of crunchy health food ethos that makes us proud to be one of the fittest cities in the nation. Health-conscious restaurants often use descriptors like “non-MSG” and “locally sourced” to explain their approach to food. The newcomer buzzword to the health world is “non-GMO.”

Opinion: Science Supports David Ash’s Decision To Retire

September 29, 2014

After it was announced that Tyrone Swoopes would be the starting quarterback under center for Texas, it seemed like only a matter of time before David Ash would make the announcement to leave football for good. Ash’s impending retirement finally culminated on Sept. 17, when Charlie Strong announced that the quarterback from Belton, Texas was retiring. During a press conference, Ash explained his decision. However, it was not a melancholy affair, nor should it have been.

5 Life Lessons from Dan Rather

April 14, 2014

Not everyday do I sit in the same room as Dan Rather. I watched him from two tables over. With my iPhone, I zoomed in on his face as he ate the same brunch I did (which he may have perhaps chosen from the same buffet table I did — cue the screams!), until I felt I had successfully captured enough photos of him for my invaluable archives, uniquely titled “Camera Roll.”

How the Internet has Changed the Human Experience

April 14, 2014

I’ll be honest, I have a love-hate relationship with the Internet. On one hand, it allows us to access a wealth of information at unprecedented speeds and connect with people on opposite ends of the world. We are able to learn more, faster, which I think is a great thing. But the other side of the coin is a bit more tarnished. Over time, the Internet has made us a cowardly people.

Linked: Long Distance Relationships

April 14, 2014

Many of us went away to college and left our loved ones behind. It’s hard to say goodbye to our parents, friends and, even worse, our high school relationship. So hard, in fact, that some of us don’t say goodbye. Long distance relationships in college are fairly common, especially for underclassmen. When we fall in love young, we are willing to turn our world upside down for our boyfriend or girlfriend. Now, we take the next step in life, and sometimes, that step is miles away from love.
