In reports, the walk is usually described as a 2.5-mile trek.
However, UT journalism professor Gene Burd does not have a GPS, nor does he use an iPhone to calculate the shortest distance from his apartment on Barton Springs Road to the Belo Center for New Media. He knows the streets as avenues for communication, not transportation, and chooses to take the long way around — to look at the City, note its changes, check all of the parking meters for loose change and stop for a chat with a lot attendant by the Capitol.

A new controversial and addicting social media app has rapidly emerged across high schools and college campuses. Yik Yak, released in November, already has hundreds of thousands of users. Simply put, the app offers a completely anonymous forum where users can post whatever is on their minds. Using GPS location services, Yik Yak provides a live feed of what the people around users are posting. Essentially, the app functions like Twitter, but with a twist: People can say anything they want without tacking their handle to the post.
Many of us went away to college and left our loved ones behind. It’s hard to say goodbye to our parents, friends and, even worse, our high school relationship. So hard, in fact, that some of us don’t say goodbye. Long distance relationships in college are fairly common, especially for underclassmen. When we fall in love young, we are willing to turn our world upside down for our boyfriend or girlfriend. Now, we take the next step in life, and sometimes, that step is miles away from love.
Last Wednesday, The Horn hosted a debate between UT’s College Republicans and University Democrats, which was moderated by The Horn and ORANGE magazine (that’s us). The debate covered topics of economy, education, healthcare and immigration. Overall, the deliberation was a success; a full house packed the Texas Union Theatre, and debaters led substantial arguments with interesting viewpoints. The real action, however, took place on the live Twitter feed rolling in the front of the room with the hashtag #UTdebate. Many questions were posed by the audience, and some brawls even broke out among select handles.
