If you haven’t seen “Broad City” yet, it’s time to step into the light. The Comedy Central show is written by and stars ride-or-die best friends Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer. Currently finishing off its second season, the show follows the ladies’ misadventures in New York City where they smoke pot, frequent Bed Bath & Beyond and get kicked out of dog parks. Through all the undermotivation and struggle, they are unashamedly themselves — and they always manage to look glorious. From power suits to Froot Loops-printed leggings, Abbi and Ilana’s distinct personal styles reflect their spontaneity and bold authenticity. Here are seven life lessons to learn from the duo’s wardrobe:
1. Crop tops are the new basic.
Ilana’s outfits take crop tops out of the realm of trend and into the role of closet staple. Her grumpy coworker Nicole describes her as “wearing a napkin as a shirt,” but nevertheless, they perfectly complement Ilana’s fearless and sexually liberated attitude.
2. Themed dress is always a good idea.
Every occasion is a special occasion on “Broad City,” and there’s no such thing as being overdressed when it comes to a big night out. From boat parties to inflatable suit dream sequences — not to mention Ilanna and Jaime’s coordinating nurse outfits — dress for the time you want to have.
3. Your statement undergarments are meant to be seen.
Ilana’s underwear is her trademark accessory. Exposed by low cut jeans, sheer tops and a one-time underboob situation in the workplace, Ilana’s visible strappy bras and boxer briefs are her gift to the world.
4. Anyone can rock the sporty look.
Abbi, a cleaner and aspiring trainer at Soulstice Gym, frequently rocks athletic ensembles. Both ladies love their leggings, always looking comfy and ready to roller skate, dance or bike. In a pair of spandex, you, too, can chase after your best friend when she’s wandering around the city on wisdom teeth medication.
5. Prepare for anything with a backpack.
A well-stocked backpack is a must for both citywide adventures and formal occasions in the Broad City playbook. Ilana’s sassy pack is ready with books, outfit changes and — just in case — pictures of Abbi sleeping.
6. Outfit repeating isn’t a crime.
What makes “Broad City” great is the duo’s balance of hilarious absurdity and reality. The practical ladies repeat many of their fave pieces and looks on the show, including Ilana’s black lace crop top, worn to both a rooftop party and her grandmother’s shiva, and Abbi’s $438 blue bandage dress that we’ve seen on multiple occasions.
7. Coordination is key.
The Broad City gals’ team spirit and best friendship is frequently channeled through coordinating looks. From stolen fur coats to matching tuxedos, the always-cohesive BFFs empower each other in looks and spirit. YAS, QUEEN!
