Recently added to the Academy of Distinguished Teachers at UT Austin, Sam Gosling has made a name for himself around campus. This isn’t surprising considering that he teaches introductory psychology, an online course that around 2,000 students tune into each week. You might know Gosling as the British psychology professor whose antics make for engaging lectures, but how much do you know about his snacking habits?
It’s crazy to think that professors have lives beyond teaching, office hours and answering our frantic emails … but they do. They eat, drink and cook (or attempt to cook) just like us! In the segment of “The Hungry Professor,” we will divulge the guilty pleasures, secret recipes and kitchen disaster stories of our favorite educators.

Same spots, same routine, same food. After a year or two, lunch gets repetitive around the UT campus. At these hidden gems within just a mile of UT, options vary and food tastes...
Following the opening of burger joints Twisted Root and Fat Sal’s earlier this year, the availability of healthy options in West Campus has been more questionable than ever. Barley Bean, a one-stop shop opening on October 15 on 23rd Street and Rio Grande, is an urban store-meets-cafe that is designed to cater to students living in West Campus. A community table and warm atmosphere make the area a potential study space and hang-outzone as well as somewhere to grab groceries or dinner.
Jerry Lee Lewis’ “Great Balls of Fire” echoes in the background as customers wait for their charcoal-grilled hamburgers. They watch cooks lay patties down on the grill on the other side of the counter. Soon, they hear the crackle of the intercom announcing their order number. They pick up their plastic, red tray. Dinner is ready.
It’s that time of year again. We’ve checked the lineup, looked up unfamiliar artists, and received our wristbands in the mail. The weekend that we’ve been looking forward to is quickly approaching, and it’s important to get all of our planning done. For example, the friends we’re going with, the artists we’ll see, and how we’re getting to Zilker Park. But have you considered what you’re going to eat?
“Boocha Queen!” one of Rachel Brumbelow’s housemates shouts from the other side of the industrial kitchen. “Teach me your secrets!” Rachel laughs warmly and continues pouring her homemade kombucha into large glass bottles. Her stainless steel workspace is littered with chopped fruit, and on her left is a gallon-sized glass jar with something brown floating on top.
April is upon us, which for many local farmers in Austin means a focus on an entirely different set of produce. As we move away from winter foods, Austin’s farmer's markets bear bright new colors with the fresh foods of spring.
I am very critical when it comes to “good” Mexican food, since I grew up eating authentic, homemade Mexican dishes. This is why Licha’s Cantina, a quaint restaurant located in East Austin off of 6th street, not only made me feel a bit nostalgic, but right at home.
Springing out from under the vendor’s tents, a variety of colors mark the walkways in between the booths. Families, couples and friends alike enjoy the relaxed vibes and live music of the Downtown Sustainable Food Center Market. Located at Guadalupe Street and 4th St. every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., this is an event that started seven years ago and welcomes those who support the efforts of hardworking growers and the local community.
